Jim Murphy PSM, Senior Advisor, Government
and Financial Services, Pottinger

Picture
I have wide-ranging experience in senior levels of government and the private sector being Deputy Secretary of the Federal Treasury from 2002 until 2013. My particular interest is in the development and effectiveness of policies relating to the financial system, competition, business growth, infrastructure and foreign investment. Prior to joining Pottinger I was the CEO of the Queensland Treasury for three years. In 2011 I was awarded a Public Service Medal for my work on the Government’s response to the global financial crisis.

I have deep knowledge of infrastructure development, the financial system and financial services and government policy formulation. My government career was built around constructive consultation with the private sector on the development and impact of government policy and the delivery of government services to the public. I have a passion for promoting sound engagement between business and Government, and enabling the private sector to flourish for the public good. My skills have enabled me to contribute significantly to various businesses’ success over the years.

Examples of experience:
  • CEO of the Queensland Treasury with a focus on economic policy, the State budget process, building and operation of infrastructure and the management of over 1,000 staff;
  • Advisor to the CEO of ANZ Bank on capital and regulation;
  • Deputy Secretary of the Federal Treasury. Responsibility included markets, the financial system, competition policy, infrastructure and foreign investment. I worked closely with Treasurers Costello and Swan;
  • Secondment as chief of staff to Prime Minister Rudd to facilitate links between Government and the public sector;
  • Advisor to the IMF in Washington. I worked on management and budget reform of the organisation;
  • Advisor to the Foreign Investment Review Board;
  • Member of Infrastructure Australia and Building Queensland. I also chaired the Brisbane Cross-River Rail Development Authority; and
  • Other roles within the Federal departments of Treasury, Finance and the Attorney-General’s.
